Our kindergarten is situated in a small village - Ajstrup - about 17 kilometers south of  Aarhus, Jutland.
The kindergarten is rather unusual - we have a lot of space inside as well as outside. Also, the number of children is unusual - 120, as opposed to the more common 50 or 60 in most Danish kindergartens.

A children's paradise
The buildings, housing the kindergarten, used to be a school. Now the school-children has been moved to bigger schools in the area and the sports ground have been  transformed to a children's paradise (20.000 square-meters) - with little hills, vegetable-gardens, a giant sandbox, a pavilion (currently housing an installment made of straw), a horse-pen with our two Shetland-ponies, a sheep-pen, rabbits by numbers!, several fireplaces, a small forest etc. Inside we also have very much room (1400 square-meters) - the gymnasium, atelier, dining-hall and the other big rooms giving the children and the personnel very many possibilities.
As mentioned we have 120 children - aged 3 to 6 years. About ¾  of these come from Aarhus. The kindergarten was established, to some extend, to cover some of the need of day-care facilities  in the central Aarhus. There is practically no more space for this in the central Aarhus, considering the need for a playground of a reasonable size, so it was decided to make use of the empty school, hire a bus and offer this alternative to parents  - and their children! The rest of the children come from Ajstrup and the nearby towns of Beder and Malling.

The Meeting-Place
The children coming from Aarhus have a place, near the Central Bus-station, called "Mødestedet" - or in English "The Meeting-Place". It opens in the morning at 6.30, like most kindergartens, and the children can have an easy start of the day, have some breakfast together with the employees or play around until 8.00, at which  time the first bus arrives to take them to Ajstrup together with a number of employees. The same thing happens at 9.00 and 10.00, after which the "Mødestedet" locks up. The parents have written the time, at which they intend to pick up their children in the afternoon, on a list - this list is taken to Ajstrup and is the basis for our organization of  the home-transportation. The first bus arrives at  "Mødestedet" at 2 PM, the next busses at 3 and 4 PM. The children can play at the "Mødestedet" until their parents arrive - some of the parents  take the time to sit down and  have a cup of coffee, talking to the employees or the other parents. The kindergarten closes up at 5 PM (on Fridays at 4.30 PM).
